The Prophecy: The Messiah is the Son of God

The Prophecy: The Messiah is the Son of God

“The kings of the earth take a stand,
and the rulers take counsel together
against the LORD and against his Messiah…
I will tell of the decree:
The LORD said to me, ‘You are my son.
Today I have begotten you.
Ask of me, and I will give the nations for your inheritance, the uttermost parts of the earth for your possession’…
Kiss the son lest he be angry,
and you perish on the way,
for his wrath will soon be kindled.
Blessed are all those who take refuge in him.” Psalm 2:2, 7-8, 12

“For to us a child is born.
To us a son is given.
And the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called:
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

The Tanach teaches that God is our Father (Deuteronomy 32:6; Isaiah 63:16), and moreover that the Messiah is his Son. In Psalm 2, David describes the Messiah as the Son of God. Isaiah portrays the Messiah as a child who receives exalted titles. Ibn Ezra (Rabbi Abraham Ben Meir) interprets the passage in Isaiah to be speaking about the Messiah: “There are those who say ‘Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father’ are the names of God, and the name of the child is ‘Prince of Peace.’ However the correct interpretation in my eyes is that all these are the names of the child.”

The Fulfillment of the Prophecy: God sent his son Jesus, the promised Messiah

Jesus is the promised Messiah and Son of God who was sent from our Father in heaven. Jesus asked his disciples: “‘But who do you say that I am?’ And Simon Peter answered and said, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ And Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.'” Matthew 16:15-17
